2、
The latest episode of the long-running comedy show South Park digs into the unethical side of freemium mobile games.

We're talking about grinding, wait-timers, and multiple in-game currencies used to encourage you to spend your real money inside a game.

If you play mobile games in any capacity then you're bound to be familiar with the pressure that comes with freemium games. It's this that the South Park episode criticizes.

You can watch the episode here, but not if you're in the UK, unfortunately. Luckily, Kotaku has some choice clips from the episode.

The first one sees a Canadian businessman explaining to Terrence and Philip what freemium games are, and how they work.

"With mobile apps we now have the ability to make games that are boring and stupid," he begins. "But, if you pay for inventions, you're rewarded."

"Freemium. The "mium" is Latin for not really," another guy adds.
Whale hunting
Another clip that, again, Kotaku has available for you to watch, delves into the concept of whales.

"Whales" is the term used by companies to refer to the one percent of users who contribute to most of a game's profits.

"The truth is, a very small percentage of people who download freemium games ever pay anything for them," the character says.

"It's all about finding the heaviest users, and extracting the most amount of cash from them.

"That's how you get addicts to pay two hundred bucks for a game that's not even worth forty cents."

Terrence then replies with: "But then all our profits come from people with problems."

The businessman's reply? "Don't think about that! Think about all the money!"
KotakuAndroid news
